Used Jeep Patriot Adelaide: The History Of In-Car Sounds

These days the stereo is an integral part of a car. In fact, judging by the thumping bass emanating from some cars cruising through Adelaide BC, for some people, it’s the most important part. Especially since it’s often coming from cars that, well, leave a little to be desired, shall we say? But what’s the link between music and driving and how did we arrive at the amazing UconnectTM system found in the 2011 Jeep Patriot?

Ever since the early days of both radio and automobiles in the 1930s, enthusiasts were adapting domestic radios for use in their cars. It seems the temptation to listen to music whilst driving was just too much. And it wasn’t long before the first commercial in-car radios were being produced.

Things stayed much the same until the development of the ‘seek’ function in the 1950s. Rather than tuning manually, frequencies could now be set so that you could concentrate fully on the driving and switch easily between preset stations.

The concept of playing recorded music in a car had always been ruled out. If you’ve ever played a vinyl record (you’d be amazed how many people today never actually have), you’ll know that even the slightest movement or molecular-level disturbance in the air around it, can cause it to skip or jump. Not exactly ideal for car journeys. But something happened in the 1960s that was to cause a revolution in the history of in-car sounds. The ‘4-track’, and later, ‘8-track’ cassette let drivers listen to the music they wanted to, when they wanted to - for the first time ever. It was a huge leap forward for drivers and music lovers.

The bulky 8-track was later replaced by the tape-cassette and then the CD. For a while it looked as if that was as far as it could go. Then in the early years of the 21st century, the next revolution in car stereos hit the shelves. You all know what we’re talking about. The ubiquitous little box called the iPod. It was now possible to carry your whole collection, not just in your car but also in the palm of your hand. Modern car manufacturers like Jeep were quick to see the potential and equipped their stereos with audio jack as standard.

We’ve come a long way since the days of modified home radios. The next generation of car stereos, pioneered by systems like the Jeep Patriot’s UconnectTM, now offer incredible quality sound.

The stereo may not be the most important part of the car but it definitely has a unique connection with automobiles. There’s just something natural about driving while listening to music, whatever your tastes. Check out the sound system in a Patriot at your Adelaide dealer and see for yourself how good it can get.
