It’s hard to believe but Muhammad Ali is 70. The self-declared (and then later by almost everyone else) ‘greatest’ has reached seven decades. There aren’t many living legends at 70, but Ali is certainly one of them. He joins an elite club of veteran septuagenarians who still have the power to inspire and enthuse. And who, despite all new comers and pretenders to the crown, still remain the greatest of all time.

Another member of the club is Jeep. The legendary manufacturer of 4WD vehicles celebrated its 70th birthday last year in 2011. Like you always think of Ali when you think of boxing, you always think of Jeep when you think of 4WD. That’s the power and hold that icons have in their field.

And the similarities don’t end there. Ali ‘floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee’. Meaning he was all grace and agility one minute and then, when it mattered, pure brute force. It’s the same ideology employed by Jeep. Jeep SUV vehicles in Adelaide are all about comfort, poise and driving style. They glide by on the roads, smoothing over even the roughest city street, like a butterfly in flight. Then, when you open it up on the trail, the sheer power is mind blowing. Ali was famous for standing up for what he believed in. Refusing to fight in the Vietnam War, Ali paid the price of public anger and being stripped of his titles and right to box. But in the end he was vindicated for his stance and hailed by many as a hero for having the courage to make it. He also triumphantly returned to boxing when most had written him off, reclaiming his titles in one of the most legendary fights in history. Ali did nothing by halves. Total commitment to the cause was his modus operandi. And that’s why he is, and will always be, the greatest.

Like Ali, Jeep has continued to be the best at what it does. Even in the face of adversity, Jeep has come out on top. When others have been foolish enough to write Jeep off, it always knew that quality and dedication would see it retake its rightful place at the top of the tree.

There aren’t many legends that have made it to 70. Along with Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep, we can now add Muhammad Ali. The greatest that there ever was.
