Kilkenny is in northern Adelaide, around 8 km from the city centre. Nearby suburbs include Woodville and Croydon. The area was first established around the mid-nineteenth century as a separate town, but was absorbed into Greater Adelaide as the railway line between Port Adelaide and the city itself brought development. Today, it is a mixed suburb with both residential and commercial development, including the Centro Adelaide. The Centro is a large covered shopping centre that attracts visitors from across Adelaide's northern suburbs.
