Cheltenham is about 10 km north-west of Adelaide City Centre, and around 6 km south of the Port of Adelaide. Like the suburbs of Alberton and Queenstown, further north along the Port Road, it is one of the older suburbs in the city, growing up during the nineteenth century to house port workers. It is a mixed suburb with residential developments and some commerce and industry around the site of the old Cheltenham Park Racecourse.
